A. Specialization
Walk into a hospital in Kenya and ask for the laboratory.
Most people imagine one quiet room with microscopes and test tubes. However, the truth is that things do not just end at the blood bench and microscope for scientists in Medical Laboratory Science. The microscope and the blood smear are only one part of a much wider landscape. Beneath the umbrella of MLS are several specialized fields, each focused on a different aspect of disease detection and patient care.
1. Hematology
Hematology is the study of blood, blood-forming organs, and blood diseases, including coagulation disorders.
In this department, scientists investigate conditions such as:
• Anemia
• Leukemia
• Malaria
In many Kenyan hospitals, a simple malaria parasite slide examined under the microscope can completely change a patient’s treatment plan.
2. Clinical Chemistry
Clinical chemistry involves the analysis of blood, urine, and other body fluids to measure biochemical, toxicological, and endocrinological parameters.
Tests in this department help monitor organ function, detect metabolic disorders, and guide treatment decisions for conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease, and liver disorders.
3. Histopathology / Serology
Histopathology focuses on the microscopic study of tissues to identify structural changes caused by disease.
This department plays a crucial role in diagnosing:
• Cancer
• Tumors
• Chronic inflammatory diseases
Scientists here examine biopsies and autopsy tissues to determine the nature and progression of disease.
4. Microbiology
Many professionals tend to specialize in microbiology, possibly because of its vast scope and the endless diversity of microorganisms.
This field deals with the identification of infectious agents through:
• Bacteriology
• Virology
• Mycology
• Parasitology
Each of these areas can also exist as independent specializations.
5. Immunology
If you have ever been curious about how the immune system works, immunology provides those answers.
This field focuses on detecting antigen–antibody reactions to diagnose diseases related to the immune system, including autoimmune disorders and infections.
6. Blood Banking / Transfusion Science
After mastering phlebotomy and basic laboratory procedures, many scientists gravitate toward transfusion science.
This department ensures compatibility and safety in blood transfusion services. Scientists here:
• Determine blood groups
• Crossmatch donor and recipient blood
• Screen donated blood for infections such as HIV and Hepatitis B.
7. Molecular Diagnostics / Genetics
This field focuses on analyzing DNA and RNA rather than relying solely on microscopy.
Techniques such as PCR are widely used to diagnose infectious diseases like COVID-19 and tuberculosis. Molecular diagnostics is also essential for detecting inherited genetic disorders and certain types of cancer.
