Thinking Of Studying Veterinary Medicine?
sue mithioriAcademics & Study Tips
If you’re considering this, here’s what you should know — beyond just “loving animals.”
There are two main degree paths recognized by the Kenya Veterinary Board:
1. Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM)
2. Bachelor of Science in Animal Health and Production
They may sound similar, but they prepare you for different careers in the animal health sector.
Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM)
This is the degree that trains you to become a veterinary doctor.
With a BVM degree, you can:
Diagnose and treat sick animals
Perform surgeries
Prescribe medication
Open and run a veterinary clinic
The program usually takes five years and has higher entry requirements.
Bachelor of Science in Animal Health and Production
This degree prepares you to work in animal health support and livestock production.
Students learn about:
Animal nutrition
Breeding and genetics
Livestock management
Disease prevention
Farm production systems
Graduates often work as veterinary paraprofessionals, animal health officers, farm managers, extension officers, or livestock consultants.
While they play an important role in animal health, they typically do not perform major surgical procedures independently. The program usually takes four years and focuses more on improving livestock productivity and management.
So which one should you choose?
Before deciding, ask yourself:
Do I want to diagnose diseases and perform surgeries as a veterinary doctor?
Or do I want to work closely with farmers to improve livestock health and production?
Both careers are valuable and needed in the animal industry. The key is choosing the path that aligns with the kind of work you see yourself doing every day.
