UNDERSTANDING AND UNPACKING KMTC
Purity NdukuCareer Advice & Internships
Hey guys! So today, we are finally unpacking and really knowing what KMTC is actually about.
This past Saturday, I was at a hospital and met this Clinical Officer, who completely changed how I see these courses. We got talking, and C.O Rashid told me something that really stuck: "Most people think if you don't go straight for a degree, your medical dream is dead. But I started right here with a Diploma, and now I’m the one literally running this entire ward."
He didn't stop at his Diploma, though. After working for about two years to gain experience and save up, he went back for a Higher Diploma in Anaesthesia. That one year specialization was his magic ticket as it bumped his salary and made him a specialist in the theatre. Now, he’s finishing his upgrading degree part time while still earning a full salary. He told me that while some people are buried in theory books for years, KMTC puts you in the hospital wards from your very first year. You get that touch and feel of real medicine before you even graduate.
If you’re joining KMTC, please know you aren't just settling in. You are building a rock solid foundation for a massive future. Take Clinical Medicine & Surgery, for example. You know those medical professionals who see you at a health center when the doctor isn't around? That's a Clinical Officer. In most rural areas, they're the only healthcare provider for miles . It’s a super versatile course where you’ll be diagnosing and treating patients from day one. As a Registered Clinical Officer (RCO), you can start in government Job Group K with a salary of around Ksh 45,000 to Ksh 65,000.
Then there’s Nursing (KRN/KRCHN). In today's job market, diploma nurses are arguably the most in demand professionals in Kenya right now (mark that- in Kenya). You’ll find a job almost immediately. But here is the secret: don’t just stay at the diploma level forever. Once you have your license and a bit of experience, you must look into upgrading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN). This is what opens the doors to becoming a Matron, a Hospital Manager or even moving into specialized roles abroad. If you specialize later with a Higher Diploma in Critical Care, you can easily cross the Ksh 100,000 mark.
Even the quiet courses are sometimes goldmines. As a Pharmaceutical Technologist (Diploma in Pharmacy), you can work in big hospitals or move into the business side and open your own chemist. It’s very entrepreneur friendly type of a job. Or look at Dental Technology, which is a forgotten gem. You specialize in making braces and implants, it’s a niche/field with very little competition but great pay in private clinics.
The best part about this whole path is the Levelling Up strategy. You start with your Diploma, get your license and start earning your own money. After two years of practice, you can upgrade to a Bachelor’s degree at a university like JKUAT, KU or any other university you can think of, provided it's licensed by Nursing Council of Kenya.
