KMTC and HELB: The Answer Every Form Four Leaver Has Been Looking For.
Frank GutoStudent Loans & HELB
Every time admission letters are released, a recurring question in student WhatsApp groups is: "If I join KMTC, can I still get HELB like university students?" The short answer is yes.
Kenya Medical Training College students are eligible for financial support through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
Many Form Four leavers are unaware of this. Some assume HELB is exclusively for public university students, while others believe KMTC students must be fully self-sponsored. This is inaccurate.
HELB provides financial assistance to KMTC students through loans and, in some cases, bursary support, depending on a needs assessment. The funding typically covers:
* Tuition support (paid directly to the institution)
* Upkeep money (sent to the student for personal expenses)
This means students admitted to KMTC programs can receive government financial support, just like their counterparts in universities and other tertiary institutions.
This matters because KMTC plays a critical role in Kenya’s health sector.
KMTC trains a large percentage of the country's frontline healthcare professionals in nursing, clinical medicine, pharmacy, laboratory sciences, and community health. Many graduates serve in public hospitals, private facilities, NGOs, and internationally.
It is a strong pillar in Kenya's healthcare system and significantly contributes to the national economy through health service delivery.
Yet, when higher education is discussed, KMTC students are sometimes excluded, particularly from funding conversations.
If you have a passion for health sciences and are considering applying to KMTC, do not let fear about fees stop you from pursuing your course.
Once admitted, you can apply for HELB funding, as can other government-sponsored students.
The key is to: Apply for KMTC on time. Secure admission. Follow HELB application guidelines carefully once the loan portal opens. Provide accurate financial information during the application process.
As you transition from Form Four to college or university, remember that higher education in Kenya is not limited to traditional universities. Institutions like KMTC offer professional training that leads directly to essential careers in the health sector.
So, if your calling is in healthcare, whether nursing, clinical medicine, nutrition, public health, or medical laboratory sciences do not panic about sponsorship.
Research your options. Apply confidently. Once admitted, explore HELB support.
Have you been silently removing KMTC from your list because you thought funding wasn’t possible?
