COMPUTER SCIENCE: THE ARCHITECT OF THE DIGITAL WORLD
Purity NdukuComputer Science & IT
If you want to build the future, Computer Science (CS) is your basic toolkit. It isn’t about fixing hardware; it's more of logic, algorithms and creating software that runs the world. You are the architect behind the apps, the security and probably the AI that everyone uses daily.
To get into a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science via KUCCPS, you need to be a math enthusiast. For the 2025/2026 cycle, cluster points for top schools like JKUAT or the University of Nairobi usually range between 38 and 45. In general the clusters range from 28 to 45. You need a C+ mean grade and specifically a C+ in Mathematics and Physics. If you miss the government slot, private giants like; Strathmore University, Daystar or United States International University (USIU) are excellent alternatives, provided you meet that same C+ math threshold.
The real reality of the Kenyan market is that it is a skills first economy. A degree gets you the interview, but your GitHub portfolio gets you the job. Companies aren't looking for people who just passed exams; they want developers who can actually code in Python, Java, or C++. If you have the skills, you are a "hot cake". If you only have the certificate, you will find the market very competitive and silent.
In the professional world, you aren't at the bottom of a hierarchy. You don't take orders from non tech managers on how to build; you are the expert they consult. You design the logic, secure the data, and decide how a system functions.
You will work in agile teams where your technical input dictates the success of the entire company’s product.
So, where is the money?
• Tech Giants: Working for Safaricom, Equity Bank, or the Microsoft Africa Development Centre (ADC).
• The Startup Scene: Joining the "Silicon Savannah" in Fintech (like M-Pesa) or Agri-tech.
• Remote Work: Many Kenyan CS grads earn in dollars by working for companies in the USA or Europe while living in Kenya.
• Government & Security: Agencies like the ICT Authority or the Central Bank of Kenya need cybersecurity experts.
The career ladder is massive. You can start as a Junior Developer and climb to Senior Engineer, Software Architect, or Chief Technology Officer (CTO).
If you love the academic side, you can pursue a Master’s to become a University Lecturer or an AI Researcher. Specializing in Data Science or Cybersecurity currently offers the highest salaries in the tech space.
