The Comrade’s Survival in this economy.
Angela Nduati
Let’s be real: the jump from high school to campus isn’t just an academic shift, it’s a financial shock. In high school, upkeep money was for snacks. In campus, that same amount is expected to cover rent, data bundles, electricity and the ever-rising price of food and groceries.
It sometimes feels like you’re juggling chainsaws while trying to keep your academics up, you aren't alone.
Here is how to master the Comrade Economy
1. Budgeting
The biggest mistake is vibes-based spending. When money hits your M-Pesa, it feels like a lot until it’s gone.
- The 50/30/20 Rule : Aim for 50% on Needs (Rent/Food), 30% on Academic/Survival (Data, printing, transport), and 20% for Savings/Emergency.
- Bulk Buying: Buying one kilo of sugar or a bale of maize flour is 20% cheaper than buying small portions daily.
2. The Work-Study Tightrope
Juggling a job and a degree is a recipe for burnout if you don't have a system.
-Â Treat school like a 9-to-5. Do all your library work and classes in one block. Use your evenings or early mornings strictly for your hustle.
- Learn to Say No: You cannot attend every party especially on a tight budget. Your future self will thank you for the discipline.
Note also, your network is your net worth. The person sitting next to you in a lecture might know about a gig. Don't just study together, hustle together.
