KUCCPS COMMON MISTAKES
Sejovi Enterprises
Every year, after KCSE results are released, I talk to students who are stressed, confused, and second-guessing themselves. And every year, I notice the same thing.
Most KUCCPS mistakes are not made because students are careless or unintelligent.
They’re made because this process happens at a moment when emotions are high, pressure is loud, and guidance is thin.
Let’s talk about these mistakes honestly, without blaming anyone.
Mistake 1: Rushing choices because everyone else seems to have decided
One of the first things that happens after results is comparison.
You open WhatsApp. Someone has already posted the course they want. Another person is confidently saying which university they’re targeting. Suddenly, you feel late, even if KUCCPS hasn’t even opened properly.
So you rush.
You start picking courses not because you understand them, but because time feels like it’s running out. Many students later realize they didn’t even read what the course actually involves. They just didn’t want to look unsure.
KUCCPS punishes rushed confidence more than quiet reflection.
Mistake 2: Choosing a course because of its name, not its reality
Some course names sound powerful. Others sound “safe”. Others sound prestigious.
But many students don’t ask the uncomfortable follow-up questions:
What do people actually do after this course?
How competitive is this field?
Does this align with how I learn and work?
I’ve seen students choose courses like engineering, medicine, or law because the name carried weight, only to struggle deeply later because they never enjoyed the learning style or the environment.
A course title can impress people today and frustrate you tomorrow.
Mistake 3: Treating KUCCPS like a one-chance life decision
This mistake creates the most anxiety.
Many students believe that if they “mess up” KUCCPS, their life is permanently damaged. That belief leads to panic and fear-based decisions.
The truth is quieter and less dramatic.
KUCCPS is a placement system, not a destiny machine.
People transfer. People change courses. People start in colleges and move to universities. People reskill years later.
The danger is not choosing the “wrong” course.
The danger is believing you are trapped.
Mistake 4: Ignoring colleges and TVETs because of stigma
Some students automatically skip colleges and TVETs, not because they’ve researched them, but because of how they are talked about.
They associate colleges with failure, or assume TVETs are for people who “didn’t try hard enough”. So they force university choices that don’t suit their grades, interests, or learning style.
Later, they struggle academically or emotionally, while others who chose applied routes build strong skills, confidence, and employability.
Avoiding a path because of stigma is not ambition. It’s fear.
Mistake 5: Letting family pressure override self-knowledge
Parents and relatives often mean well. They want security. They want pride. They want what they understand.
But sometimes that pressure sounds like:
“Just do this course, it has jobs.”
“Don’t choose that, people will talk.”
“Follow what your cousin did.”
Students who ignore their own strengths and preferences completely often burn out quietly later.
Listening to advice is wise.
Surrendering your agency entirely is dangerous.
Mistake 6: Not understanding how KUCCPS placement actually works
Some students choose courses without understanding:
cut-off points
cluster subjects
competition levels
how placement priorities work
So when results come out, they’re shocked.
“I qualified, why wasn’t I placed?”
“I got a course I didn’t even expect.”
This isn’t bad luck. It’s missing information.
Understanding the system doesn’t guarantee your first choice, but it protects you from confusion and resentment.
Mistake 7: Assuming everyone else knows what they’re doing
Here’s a quiet truth.
Most students you see sounding confident are also guessing, just more loudly.
Many of them are copying siblings, friends, or online lists. Some will realize much later that they never truly understood their choices.
Confidence during KUCCPS is often performative.
Clarity is rare.
A grounding reminder before you make any choice
KUCCPS works best when you slow down.
Ask yourself:
What kind of learning environment do I thrive in?
Do I prefer theory or hands-on work?
Am I choosing this out of curiosity or fear?
What skills will this path help me build?
You don’t need perfect answers. You need honest ones.
Making mistakes during KUCCPS doesn’t make you weak. It makes you human.
The goal is not to avoid every misstep.
The goal is to make informed, conscious decisions instead of rushed, fear-driven ones.
We’ll keep walking this process together, step by step.
In the next threads, we’ll break down how KUCCPS placement actually works, so you’re not choosing in the dark.
Before that, pause and reflect,
Which of these mistakes do you feel most tempted to make right now?
