A Guide to Sports Scholarships in Kenya.
Angela Nduati
If you’ve excelled in sports and worked hard on the pitch, court or field, that talent could unlock financial support for your degree.
In Kenya, several private universities offer sports-linked scholarships or financial aid to recruit and support talented athletes especially those who join their competitive sports teams.
🎓 Sports Scholarship Opportunities at Kenyan Universities
1. Zetech University
Zetech University has a Sports Scholarship Fund that supports talented athletes academically and in their sporting journeys. The university offers opportunities for students in football, basketball, rugby, volleyball and other sports through its teams and programmes. Student athletes have even gone on from Zetech to secure further sports opportunities abroad.
2. Strathmore University
Strathmore University’s Financial Aid Office manages a range of scholarships that include sports-related awards as part of its overall financial aid programme. These awards support students who have demonstrated talent in sports along with academic performance.
3. USIU-Africa
The United States International University-Africa offers sports scholarships as part of its institutional scholarship scheme. There are categories with tuition discounts (for example 40 % and 65 % support for freshmen with sporting talent).
4. Daystar University
Daystar University includes sports merit scholarships in its financial aid portfolio for talented athletes, historically including categories such as rugby, basketball (ladies) and volleyball (ladies). These awards require admission and evidence of sports performance (e.g., Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association certificates)
Note: Daystar’s criteria also include character and other requirements as outlined on their official pages.
🏆 SOME HANDY TIPS FOR APPLICANTS
1. Apply for Admission Early
Get your university admission letter first; most universities will not consider financial aid without it.
2. Prepare Your Documents
Scan your KSSSA certificates, sports awards, testimonials and recommendation letters from your coach or games teacher.
3. Track Deadlines
Scholarship and financial aid deadlines may open months before intake watch university financial aid pages and social media accounts.
4. Attend Trials & Showcases
Some universities hold open trials or talent showcases these can boost your visibility and chances.
5. Maintain standards: Many awards expect you to continue performing both academically and in your sport to keep the scholarship.
