How do you split HELB money to last 3 months?
As a student who really struggled with managing HELB money in my first year, I can honestly say that it was a painful but powerful lesson. The first disbursement came in, and I felt rich. I didn’t think twice about buying new clothes, eating out, and helping people back home. Within a month, I was broke. I had to borrow from friends just to survive, and it was humiliating. But I learned — the hard way — how to split HELB money to last the full three months.
Here’s how I do it now:
1. Create a Simple Budget Immediately
As soon as HELB hits your account, don’t touch it until you’ve planned how to spend every shilling. Break it down like this:
Rent/Hostel Fees – Pay this first if it’s not already deducted.
Food & Essentials – Estimate how much you need per week for food, soap, tissue, etc.
School Supplies – Set aside money for printing, stationery, and maybe data bundles.
