How do you ask for academic help without looking dumb?
Hugo
I used to stay quiet even when I was totally lost in class because I was so scared of looking dumb. I thought everyone else understood the topic and I’d be exposing myself if I asked for help. Even texting classmates for clarification made me overthink my words — like, “Will they think I wasn’t paying attention?” So I’d end up struggling in silence, falling behind, and pretending I was okay.
Eventually, I realized asking for help is actually a strength. I started with small steps — like asking questions after class or approaching a classmate I trusted. Most times, they were actually relieved someone else was confused too. I learned to phrase my questions like, “Hey, I’m trying to understand this part better, could you help me out?” It sounds confident and shows effort. Turns out, nobody’s really judging — most people are just trying to survive too.
