Is it just me or are the lecturers too fast to even ask questions?

Honestly, it’s not just you—many of us felt the exact same thing when we joined university. Lecturers often move fast through topics, especially in first year, because they assume you're keeping up with the reading or already have a strong foundation from high school. But university isn't high school—things get deeper, quicker. As a first-year, it can feel overwhelming when a lecturer jumps from concept to concept without pause, and before you can even raise your hand, they’re already ten slides ahead. It’s frustrating, especially when you're genuinely trying to understand. What helped me was reviewing the lecture notes in advance if possible, and forming small study groups to go over the confusing parts afterward.
As a senior student now, I want to assure you it’s okay to feel a bit lost at the beginning. Don’t let the pace make you think you’re not smart enough—it’s a common experience. The trick is to take advantage of office hours, WhatsApp class groups, and sometimes even reaching out to your TA (teaching assistant) if you have one. If you’re too shy to ask in class, write your question down and follow up later. It gets easier once you figure out how to navigate the speed without losing confidence. You’re not alone, and you definitely can catch up—it just takes a bit of adjusting.
