Should I tell my parents I’m already struggling or just handle it myself?
Mwende
When I first started struggling, I kept everything to myself because I didn’t want to worry my parents or feel like I had failed them. I convinced myself that I could fix things on my own, but all that did was make me more anxious and isolated. Every phone call felt like I was acting, pretending things were fine while I was actually overwhelmed with school, deadlines, and trying to stay afloat. The pressure of hiding it only made things worse, and it took a toll on my mental health and performance.
Eventually, I broke down and opened up to them—not with a dramatic speech, just a simple, honest conversation. To my surprise, they didn’t judge me or get mad. They listened, supported me emotionally, and helped me think clearly about my options. That conversation didn’t solve everything overnight, but it gave me room to breathe and reminded me I didn’t have to do everything alone. Telling them wasn’t a sign of weakness—it was the first real step toward finding balance again.
