Why do we act like everything isfine when we’re stressed?
Mueni
I used to act like everything was fine even when I was completely overwhelmed because I didn’t want anyone to think I was weak or couldn’t handle campus life. There’s this silent pressure to appear like you’ve got it all together — attending classes, keeping up with friends, maybe even holding a side hustle, all while pretending like the stress isn’t eating you up. I was scared to open up because I thought people would either not care or think less of me. So I smiled, cracked jokes, and carried on like nothing was wrong, even when I was breaking down inside.
Eventually, I reached a point where pretending was no longer sustainable — I started falling behind in class, isolating myself, and losing sleep. That’s when I learned that bottling things up doesn’t make you stronger; it just delays healing. Opening up to one close friend changed everything. I realized people actually understood more than I expected, and some were going through the same thing. With support, I started managing my stress better and stopped feeling like I had to fake being okay all the time. Being real about your struggles is hard, but it’s honestly what helped me get through.
