Why You Should Consider Studying Animal Husbandry After KCSE
Frank GutoAcademics & Study Tips
If you love animals, farming, and working with livestock, Animal Husbandry could be the perfect course for you. This course focuses on the management, breeding, and care of farm animals like cows, goats, sheep, poultry, and even camels. It combines both practical and theoretical knowledge, helping students understand animal nutrition, reproduction, disease management, and farm productivity. By studying Animal Husbandry, you can contribute to improving food security, sustainable farming, and the livestock industry in Kenya and beyond.
The course typically falls under Cluster 14: Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences for KUCCPS placements. To qualify, students generally need a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+. In addition, most universities require C+ in Biology or Agriculture and C+ in either Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics. The cut-off points for government-sponsored students usually range between 22 and 28 cluster points, depending on the competition and year.
Several universities in Kenya offer Animal Husbandry programs, including Egerton University, University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Moi University, and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). Some universities offer it as a Bachelor of Science in Animal Production, Animal Science, or Agriculture with Animal Husbandry options. Students receive training in both classroom theory and practical farm work, giving them hands-on experience in livestock management.
Choosing Animal Husbandry as a course requires patience, dedication, and a genuine interest in animals and farming. Students will learn about animal breeding techniques, feeding strategies, disease prevention, farm economics, and sustainable livestock practices. Graduates can work as farm managers, livestock officers, veterinarians’ assistants, animal nutritionists, or start their own livestock businesses. The skills gained are practical, in demand, and can create opportunities in both rural and urban settings.
For Form Four leavers exploring career paths, Animal Husbandry is more than a course. It is a chance to combine your love for animals with a stable and rewarding career. By understanding the course content, entry requirements, and potential careers, you can make an informed decision that aligns with your strengths and interests.
Let me say this as I end this thread, I want to see students in different fields solving real problems, because these are the kinds of challenges that farmers face with their livestock. By stepping into courses like Animal Husbandry, you not only build a career but also create solutions that make a real difference in people’s lives and the community.
