Want to Pursue a Degree in Theology?
Frank GutoAcademics & Study Tips
When many Form Four leavers hear the word Theology, they often think it is only for pastors or church leaders. But theology is much deeper than that. It is a course that focuses on understanding religion, faith, ethics, and how beliefs shape society.
Theology is the study of God, religious teachings, scriptures, and moral values. Students in this course learn about the Bible or other religious texts, church history, philosophy, counseling, and leadership. It is not just about preaching. No, it is about understanding people, guiding communities, and addressing real-life issues from a moral and spiritual perspective.
To pursue a degree in Theology in many universities in Kenya, the general requirement is a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus). Some universities may also consider performance in subjects like Religious Studies (CRE/IRE/HRE), English, or Kiswahili. Cluster points may vary depending on the institution and competition, but they are generally lower compared to highly competitive courses.
Several institutions offer Theology or related courses. Examples include Daystar University, Catholic University of Eastern Africa, St. Paul’s University, and Africa Nazarene University. Some programs may be offered as Bachelor of Theology, Divinity, or Religious Studies, depending on the institution.
After completing this course, graduates can work in areas such as pastoral ministry, counseling, teaching, community leadership, chaplaincy, and non-governmental organizations. Some also pursue further studies to specialize in theology, counseling, or religious leadership.
For Form Four leavers considering this course, ask yourself this: Do I have a passion for understanding faith, guiding others, and serving the community? Theology is not just an academic course, it is a calling that requires commitment, discipline, and a strong sense of purpose.
As you think about your future, remember that not every path is about money or status. Some paths are about purpose and service. If theology speaks to you, take time to understand it deeply before making your decision.
In today’s society, leadership in matters of faith requires more than just passion. It requires knowledge, understanding, and proper guidance. While not every church strictly requires a degree, having a qualification in theology, whether a degree or even a master’s level, gives you the credibility and deeper understanding needed to lead people responsibly. This is what makes theology such a critical course, not just in Kenya, but even in other parts of the world.
