If you are probably feeling tired and you really feel like you need time off before joining uni, your feeling is valid. In fact, so valid. Contrary to what your a lot of people might say, a gap year isn't failing or wasting time, it’s a voluntary, purposeful choice, that you make before you commit four years of your life to university or to your degree.
Being very honest with you, taking a gap year takes serious courage and confidence. It’s much easier to just follow the crowd to the University of Nairobi or KU, than it is to stand your ground and say, "I really don't feel ready yet." It’s a bold move, but listen, you can't just sit and watch as time flies away; you need a purpose.
While you’re selling this gap year to yourself (and your parents), think about the massive endeavors you can get into. This is the best time to:
* Realize Yourself: Are you actually a hands on person or are you a creative?
* Upskill Early: Mastering Python, Graphic Design, or Digital Marketing because this skills will come in handy in the future or even still during your gap year.
* Volunteer or Intern: Get a foot in the door at a local NGO, a start up or even a local business and see if you actually like the path of your chosen career. You can also try out different things as it can help you identify passions you never knew you had.
* Goal Setting: This is time where you map out who you want to be, so you don't end up like frustrated 3rd-year student switching courses.
If you really want to take a gap year, once you get your admission, if possible write an email to the school or visit it physically and ask them to allow you defer. Don't just disappear! If you’ve been placed by KUCCPS, you need to report to the university and officially apply for a deferment. This holds your slot for a year so you don't lose your government sponsorship or your place in the program.
We are here to help you navigate this in between phase. Whether it's helping you realize your rightful career path through mentorship or showing you how to turn your gap year interests into a rich portfolio, we’ve got your back. Make that period about finding the you that isn't defined by a high school grade. If you’re ready to step out of the race to find your own pace, keep your eyes on the vision.
