How to Know a Course is Right for You Before You Apply
Frank GutoFreshers & Orientation
Choosing a course is not just about cluster points or what people recommend, it’s about fit. One of the biggest challenges Form Four leavers face is knowing whether a course is truly right for them before they apply.
The question is, how do you actually tell? First, ask yourself a simple but powerful question, Can I enjoy learning this for the next 4 years? Every course comes with assignments, exams, projects, and even long hours of studying. If it already feels like a burden from the start, that’s a sign you need to rethink your choice.
Secondly, look at your natural strengths. Are you good at writing, analyzing, solving problems, or working with numbers? Your strengths often guide you toward courses where you’re more likely to excel.
Another important factor is curiosity. When you come across topics related to that course, do you feel interested or do you ignore them? Interest is what keeps you going even when things get challenging.
You should also try to visualize your future. Can you see yourself working in that field? It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should at least make sense to you.
Don’t forget to check the actual course content, not just the name. Some courses sound attractive, but when you look deeper into the units and expectations, they may be very different from what you imagined.
Now here’s something many people will never tell you, different courses have different academic calendars. Some have shorter holidays, while others have longer breaks. This means a student in one course might graduate earlier, while another may take longer. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, I’m just enlightening you on realities you may not hear elsewhere.
It’s also okay to be unsure. Clarity doesn’t always come immediately, I think it comes from exploring, asking questions, and learning more about different paths.
From what I’ve seen, students who take time to understand themselves before choosing a course tend to be more confident and less likely to regret later.
Take your favourite time, and choose what truly works for you.
