THE HARDEST MONTH OF THE SEMESTER FOR MOST STUDENTS
sue mithioriAcademics & Study Tips
The reasons why most students struggle the most during the last month of the semester.
âThis is the period when youâre tested on everything youâve been learning over the past three months. Itâs also the time when campus suddenly feels emptyâeveryone is locked in, trying to catch up.
âThe reasons behind this struggle may differ, but here are the main ones:
â
â1. Pressure
âThis period reminds students of what they came to do in school. Even the brightest student can feel overwhelmed, because no one ever feels fully prepared. Thereâs a wave of uncertainty, anxiety, and tension in the air.
âYou start asking yourself:
ââDid I really understand this unit?â
ââIs it okay if I skip this topic?â
ââWill the lecturer repeat the last exam paper?â
â
â2. Unpreparedness
âAt the beginning of the semester, you set goals and visualize your plan⌠but along the way, execution fails.
âYou skip classes
âYou lose motivation
âYou get distracted
âBy the time exams approach, reality hits. you feel left behind and suddenly donât know how to balance your academic life.
â
â3. Poor Time Management
âCampus comes with freedom and distractions. At the start, time feels like itâs on your side. You postpone things regarding academics for friends, events, relationships, social media, among others.
âNot all at once but little by little, they take priority over your academics. You tell yourself thereâs still time. A whole three months to study.....until suddenly⌠there isnât, everything feels urgent and overwhelming
â
â4. Wrong Mindset (Peer Influence)
âThis is one of the most dangerous traps.
âSome students rarely attend physical classes and rely only on online materials. Others get jobs and shift their focus. Some simply get carried away by campus life. So one may think,
âIf my friends arenât putting in effort, why should I?â
âThat mindset spreads quicklyâand before you know it, doing the bare minimum feels normal.
âIt doesnât always mean theyâre not readingâbut without consistency, everything eventually becomes overwhelming.
â
âThis is why youâll hear students saying:
ââNaokolea semâŚ..operation okoa semester.â
âBut the truth is:
âThe last month doesnât create the problem⌠it exposes it. The best method to overcome this is to visualize, plan accordingly and execute the plan, you'll never be the same again.
