Frank GutoCareer Advice & Internships
Have you ever wondered why people behave the way they do? Why someone reacts differently in the same situation, or how emotions, thoughts, and experiences shape our decisions? If questions like these have ever crossed your mind, then Psychology might be a course worth exploring as you prepare to choose your path after high school.
Psychology is the scientific study of human behavior, thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. Students in this course learn how people think, how they make decisions, how they relate with others, and how mental health influences everyday life. The course also explores areas such as counseling, child development, social behavior, learning processes, and mental health awareness.
To pursue a degree in psychology in many universities in Kenya, students are usually required to have a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus). Universities may also consider performance in subjects such as Biology, English, or Mathematics, depending on the institution. Cluster points may vary each year but generally fall around 30–35 cluster points, depending on demand and competition through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service.
Several universities offer psychology or related programs. Examples include University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, United States International University-Africa, Mount Kenya University, and Daystar University. Some universities offer Bachelor of Psychology, while others provide programs such as Counseling Psychology or psychology combined with other social science fields.
After graduating, psychology students can work in areas such as counseling, mental health support, human resource management, research, community development, and education. Some graduates also continue with postgraduate studies to become professional psychologists or therapists.
