Sometimes when I talk to Form Four leavers about courses they are interested in, one name keeps coming up: Criminology and Security Studies. Many students are curious about crime investigation, security systems, and understanding why crimes happen in society. If you are one of those students thinking about this field, here is a simple overview that can help you understand the course better.
Criminology and Security Studies focuses on understanding crime, criminal behavior, and how societies respond to crime through law enforcement and security systems. Students in this course study areas such as criminal justice, policing, forensic investigation, security management, and crime prevention. The course helps students understand not only how crimes occur but also how institutions and professionals work to prevent and manage them.
To study Criminology and Security Studies in many Kenyan universities, students are usually required to have a minimum KCSE mean grade of C+ (plus). Some universities may also consider performance in subjects such as English, Mathematics, History and Government, or Business Studies, depending on the program requirements. The cluster points may vary slightly each year, but they generally fall around 28–32 cluster points, depending on the university and competition during that placement year through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service.
Several universities in Kenya offer this course. Examples include Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Egerton University, and Kenyatta University, among others. Each institution may structure the program slightly differently, but the core focus remains understanding crime and improving security systems.
After completing this degree, graduates can work in areas such as security management, crime research, investigation support, intelligence analysis, and correctional services. Some also work with private security companies, government agencies, or organizations focused on crime prevention and community safety.
For Form Four students considering this course, the most important thing is to research the field and understand what it involves. If you are interested in understanding how crime affects society, how investigations work, and how security systems are designed to protect people, then Criminology and Security Studies may be a course worth exploring.
