Culture Shock in Campus
Jenny OdhiamboFreshers & Orientation
Starting university is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Many students experience culture shock during their first months on campus. This happens when you move into a new environment with different social norms, lifestyles, and expectations.
It can look like:
1. Feeling out of place
You may feel like everyone else understands
campus life except you.
2. Homesickness
Missing family, old friends, and familiar
routines is very common.
3.Academic pressure
University learning is different from high
school. Lectures are faster, and independent
study becomes important.
4. Social adjustment
You suddenly meet people from different
backgrounds, cultures, and personalities.
5.Lifestyle changes
Managing your own schedule, finances,
meals, and sleep can feel overwhelming.
Stages of Campus Culture Shock
1.Excitement stage β Everything feels new and interesting.
2.Frustration stage β You start feeling lonely, confused, or stressed.
3.Adjustment stage β You begin understanding the system and finding your rhythm.
4.Acceptance stage β Campus starts to feel like a second home.
How to Handle It
1.Give yourself time β Adjustment doesn't happen overnight.
2.Find your people β Join clubs, societies, or study groups.
3.Create routines β A stable routine helps you feel grounded.
4.Ask for help β Talk to seniors, lecturers, or counselors if you're struggling.
