The 5 Biggest Mistakes First-Year University Students Make: Learn Them Before You Join Campus.
Frank GutoFreshers & Orientation
Joining university is exciting. It feels like stepping into a new world full of freedom, opportunities, and independence. But that same freedom can easily become a trap if you are not careful. I know this because I have experienced it myself.
When I joined Kabarak University as a first-year student, my lifestyle was very different. I struggled with time management, punctuality to lectures, and sometimes even submitting assignments on time. In high school, things were more structured, but campus life demands personal discipline. The truth is, many freshmen face the same challenge, and some never recover from the mistakes they make in their first year.
One of the biggest mistakes is poor time management. On campus, nobody follows you around to remind you about classes or assignments. Many students waste time thinking there is always tomorrow, until deadlines pile up and stress takes over.
Another mistake is skipping lectures. Some students believe they can just borrow notes later. Unfortunately, this habit slowly disconnects you from your studies, and by the time exams arrive, catching up becomes very difficult.
The third mistake is misusing freedom. Campus life offers a lot of independence, but some students use it for partying, excessive socializing, or habits that distract them from their goals. Freedom without discipline can destroy your academic journey.
The fourth mistake is choosing the wrong circle of friends. The people you spend time with will influence your decisions, your habits, and even your future. Surround yourself with people who are focused, positive, and ambitious.
The fifth mistake is forgetting why you came to campus. Many students get lost in the excitement of university life and lose sight of their purpose. Remember, you came to learn, grow, and prepare for your future.
To every Form Four student preparing to join campus, let me tell you this: university can transform your life if you approach it with discipline, focus, and the right mindset. Learn from those who came before you. Manage your time well, attend your lectures, choose your friends wisely, and never forget your goals. Campus is a place full of opportunities, but only those who stay focused will truly benefit from it. When your time finally comes to step into that new world, walk in prepared, not just to enjoy the freedom but to build the future you truly deserve.
