Managing Anxiety About Cut-Off Points and Course Placement
Jenny OdhiamboMental Health & Counseling
Many students post high school, experience a lot of anxiety. Waiting for results, worrying about cut-off points, and hoping to get your dream course can be a trigger for stress and self doubt.
While it's normal to feel this way,the truth is, cut-off points and course placements do not define our IQ and capabilities. They are only one part of a bigger picture.
The causes of anxiety are:
1.High expectations from those around us
2.Uncertainty of the future
3.Comparisons between ourselves and others
We manage it through:
1.Focusing on what is within your control
2.Talking about it with those we can trust
3.Limiting comparisons
4.Preparing mentally for alternatives
5.Practicing self-care techniques like journaling and meditation
The take home point is many successful people did not get their first choice of course or university, yet they thrived because they adapted, stayed disciplined, and worked on their skills.
Campus life is about growth, resilience, and discovery. Learning to manage stress and anxiety before even joining can give you a strong foundation for the years ahead.
