Dreaming of studying Abroad? Don’t Ignore the Basics…
Roxana KellenAcademics & Study Tips
Two out of five Kenyan students get so excited about studying abroad that they forget the basics, and that’s where mistakes happen. In the end, out of the two, only one studies abroad.
Budgeting Mistakes:
One common problem is ignoring the full cost. Tuition might range from $5,000–$20,000 per year, housing $3,000–$10,000, and living expenses $2,000–$5,000. Some students only think about tuition and end up short. Make a complete budget including rent, food, transport, insurance, and an emergency fund—plan for at least 10–15% extra.
Visa and Admission Oversights:
A strong grade alone won’t get you in. Always check minimum grades, language tests like IELTS or TOEFL, and visa requirements. Missing a deadline or document can cost you your place entirely.
Understanding Academic & Cultural Differences:
In the US, for example, 30–40% of your grade comes from class participation, which is very different from Kenya’s exam-focused system. Research assignments, grading style, and classroom expectations before you go.
Choosing the Right University:
Some students pick universities just for the name, assuming bigger is always better. A famous school doesn’t guarantee better opportunities. Focus on course content, internships, and graduate employability rates—they matter more for your career.
Planning for Emergencies:
Things can go wrong, so keep emergency contacts, health insurance, and extra savings handy. Students who prepare well are 60% more likely to have a smooth study abroad experience.
To be honest
Studying abroad can be life-changing, but preparation is everything. Research every detail, budget wisely, and plan for surprises—you’ll thank yourself later.
